HOW DO I SET UP MY CLINIC ON THE PIAVET PLATFORM?

Look for the ‘Welcome’ email from administrator@piavita.com in your inbox.  It will include a link that will direct you to set your password and login to piavita-vet.com. After the initial set-up, the Piavet System is ready for regular use.

Note: We recommend completing the tutorial that opens automatically to walk you through the main features on the Piavet Platform.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO START A MEASUREMENT WITHOUT PIAVET PLATFORM?

All three components of the Piavet System — the Measuring Device, Base Station, and Piavet Platform are critical for its use. You must click on “Start” and “Stop Measurement” on Piavet Plaform to create recording.

HOW TIGHT SHOULD THE BELT BE ON THE HORSE?

The belt should be tight enough to keep the bottom side of the Measuring Device in constant contact with the horse’s body, but loose enough so the horse can breathe and move freely without pain.

WHAT DO THE LIGHTS INDICATE?

On the Device Charger:
White pulses – device is charging
Green – device is fully charged

On the Measuring Device:
Red pulses – Low or out of battery
Default color*  (pulses every 6 seconds) – Ready for new recording
Default color* (pulses every 2 seconds) – Recording active, no real-time data transfer
Orange pulses – Data is synchronizing
Green pulses – Device is charging

*Each Measuring Device has its specific default colour to distinguish the Measuring Devices from each other. You can customize the default colour on the Piavet Platform.

On the Base Station:
Purple – The Base Station is using an integrated SIM-card for internet access
Blue – The Base Station is using LAN for continuous internet access
Yellow – System is starting up or in synch
Red – The Base Station is without internet connection and searching

HOW DURABLE IS THE MEASURING DEVICE?

The Measuring Device is highly durable and is waterproof and UV-resistant. Due to its soft surface, it will not be destroyed if the horse lays on it. The Measuring Device can be cleaned with all common cleaners and liquids.

HOW DO I KNOW IF THE BATTERIES ARE LOW?

You can check the battery life of the Measuring Device on the Piavet Platform. Simply click “Piavita Devices” on the left side of the page.

Note: To save battery life, the Measuring Device should always be left on the Piavita Charger when not in use. We recommend charging the Base Station in conjunction so that it is not forgotten. It takes approximately one hour to fully charge.

HOW DO I KNOW IF THE DEVICES ARE ONLINE?

The “Piavita Devices” tab on the left side of the platform will show important information regarding the Measuring Devices and Base Station, ie: battery life and connection.

HOW CLOSE SHOULD THE MEASURING DEVICE BE TO THE BASE STATION WHEN MAKING A MEASUREMENT?

The Measuring Device and Base Station must not be further than 30 meters from each other. Please ensure that there are no major obstructions such as metal doors or walls separating the two devices. If the above requirements are fulfilled, the status of the Measuring Device is shown as “ready,” meaning it is ready to start or stop a measurement.

ARE THE MEASUREMENTS ONGOING WHILE THE PATIENT WITH THE MEASURING DEVICE LEAVES THE VICINITY OF THE BASE STATION?

The connection may be lost during a measurement if the distance between the Measuring Device and Base Station exceeds 30 meters. In such a case, the data that was collected will be saved and the measurements will continue once the two devices are within reach of each other and have connection again.

Note: During re-synchronisation, the initial readings may look strange.

HOW LONG CAN I MEASURE ON A FULL BATTERY / CAN I MEASURE OVERNIGHT?

On full batteries, the Piavet System can make a measurement for as long as 16 hours before needing a recharge.

I AM GETTING GAPS & INCONSISTENCIES IN MY MEASUREMENTS. / MY MEASURING RESULTS SEEM A BIT OFF.

① Check the internet connection and if the devices are close enough to each other.
② See that the Measuring Device is properly fixed on the patient.
③ Consider re-application of alcohol or ECG gel (for long-term monitoring) where the Measuring Device contacts the coat.
④ Make sure the device you access the platform with is up-to-date.

HOW TO USE THE BELT IN THE RIGHT WAY?

① Open the clip of the velcro, and place the belt slightly behind the wither of the horse.
② Close the velcro and tighten the belt on the side of the barrel. The belt should be approximately one hand behind the front legs.
③ Make sure the mount of Piavet Measuring Device should not be too close to the muscle of the front legs.
④ If you are ready with the steps you take a walk with the horse. The belt should at a stable position and should not glide anymore. You can check the belt tightness after a few minutes to be sure the belt is assembled well enough.

Important note: Make sure that the belt is tightened enough, but not too much. You should be able to fit your open hand under the belt once it is on the horse. If the belt is too tight, the horse will breath into his stomach and no longer into his chest. This might affect the respiration rate measurement results.

WHEN TO APPLY ELECTRODE GEL OR ALCOHOL?

There are different facts which could change the relations like effects of heat, cold, variations in temperature or the humidity of the air. But in general you should try to use alcohol every time.

Important note:
– The surgical spirit should be at least with 70% alcohol. Please use ethanol, never use Isopropanol.
– Make sure you are using electrode gel – not ultrasound gel.

In summer:
You can usually work with alcohol. Most of the time when it is hot and humid, or when the horse is sweating a bit, these are the perfect conditions for alcohol.

In winter:
Mostly horses have undercoat so it is more difficult to get connection between the skin and Measuring Device. You can clean the coat with alcohol, and put two stripes of gel at the coat:

Short term measurement (up to 1.5 hours measurement):

In short term measurements you can always use surgical spirit. Make sure to massage the spirit down to the skin until it soaks the coat.

Long term measurement (from 1.5 hours measurement):
When should I clip the coat before measurement? If you are not sure if the sprit is going through the coat to the skin, we recommend clipping the coat.

Unclipped coat:
1) Make Sure the coat is clean where the electrode gel will sit.
2) Soak the coat in an alcohol-water mix.
3) Apply the electrode gel in two distinct stripes as the figure above.
4) Make sure you are using electrode gel – not ultrasound gel. (Electrode gel has the characteristic that it could conduct the electrical signals from skin to the Measuring Device.)

Clipped coat:
1) Ensure the skin is clean.
2) Apply two stripes of electrode gel, only where the ECG electrodes will be placed as the figure above.
3) Make sure you are using electrode gel – not ultrasound gel.
4) Check the tightness of the Piavita Belt – it may need to be tightened.

HOW TO APPLY ELECTRODE GEL OR ALCOHOL ON THE HORSE?

Put the belt at the horse, and apply alcohol or electrode gel to clean the fur and to get the connection between Measuring device and skin. This step is important as the electrical signal only transfers with electrolytes medium.

To apply alcohol:
1) Apply Piavet Belt on the horse.
2) Spray alcohol where the measuring device should sit
3) You can put the belt on the side to spray even more alcohol on it.

4) Make sure that the alcohol is soaked in the skin.

To apply electrode gel:
1) Apply Piavet Belt on the horse.

2) Spray alcohol where the measuring device should sit  to clean the fur.
3) Apply only two stripes of electrode gel on the fur, and make sure that the stripes don’t have contact with each other:

Important note:
– The surgical spirit should be at least with 70% alcohol. Please use ethanol, never use Isopropanol.
– Make sure you are using electrode gel – not ultrasound gel.
