The Piavet System was created for equine veterinarians to alleviate some of the repetitive and manual tasks involved in daily practice. Piavet’s many use cases are enabled by continuous, remote monitoring and the use of our unique software-as-a-service platform.
About the Piavet System
At Piavita, our goal is to bring innovative technology to hard-working veterinary professionals who deserve the data-based, time-saving, patient-focused solutions that have long been used in human medicine. The Piavet System employs a robust measuring device that horses can comfortably wear over long periods, using integrated sensors to deliver vital sign measurements and related health data. This is all done wirelessly and remotely, and data can be viewed on the Piavet Platform in real-time from anywhere.
Our advanced software platform gives veterinarians and clinic staff full access to patient information, records, vital sign measurements and a host of features and functionality. If you’re learning about Piavita for the first time, take a look at our founders’ story and check out our blog to get to know the Piavet System.
Continuous, Remote Monitoring
The Piavet System has a number of use cases that are all centered on the benefits of continuous, remote monitoring. This capability allows vets to get objective insights into patient vital signs and see trends over time. This aids vets in their diagnostic decisions and increases their service offering to horse-owner clients.
Überwachung auf der Intensivstation & in der -pflege
Intensive care patients need continuous monitoring, day and night. With the Piavet System, vets can keep complications from escalating after surgery and more effectively monitor critical care patients around the clock. One of the most common reasons for surgery is colic. Whether a horse just needs to be monitored in their home stable or requires around-the-clock supervision in a hospital setting, colic patients need continuous vital sign monitoring of things like temperature and heart rate. In addition, the unique capabilities of the Piavet System are particularly useful in handling infectious disease cases or observing horses in isolation. Remote vital sign monitoring keeps vets informed about patient health while ensuring the safety of horses and veterinary staff alike. With the long-wear comfort of the Piavet Belt and customizable alerts, vets can continuously and remotely monitor at-risk patients over long periods knowing they will be alerted at the first signs of distress.
ECG Visualization & Cardiac Monitoring
The Piavet System can run long-term ECG analysis recordings to help vets detect arrhythmias, guiding prognosis and treatment of things like atrial fibrillation. It also measures R-R intervals to give vets deeper insights into heart rate variability. As cardiac analysis is central to understanding so many aspects of equine health, it’s important that vets and specialists have objective data and insights from horses at rest or directly following exertion. With the ability to view real-time ECG recordings, compare findings to past measurements, see detailed cardiac health values, export reports, and share data with colleagues and specialists, the Piavet System is a one-stop shop for cardiac monitoring and care.
With insights from a full set of vital-sign data, the Piavet System can be used during medical and lameness exams to objectively detect pain during palpation or activity. This is especially valuable during pre-purchase exams, as it gives both parties peace of mind knowing that subjectivity isn’t playing a role. Seeing vital sign data (such as heart rate) in real time alongside musculoskeletal exams is especially useful in assessing overall lameness, pinpointing back pain, confirming hot spots in the hoof, and more. While horses typically exhibit physical responses to acute or sharp pain, such as lifting their head or pinning their ears, many horses mask physical displays of discomfort out of instinct. But an increased heart rate can’t be hidden, and can give vets objective clarity during palpation or other medical examinations or treatments.
Some horses, although they may not be admitted to a hospital, are still at a higher risk for issues that keep their owners and vets on high alert. Whether it’s due to previous colic surgery, pregnancy, age, or a heart condition, many horses can be considered “high risk.” The Piavet System can be used to give owners and vets assurance that these horses are being monitored, whether in their home stable or at the clinic. Regular vital sign monitoring gives vets a clear view of normal ranges and allows the system to learn about the patient over time. And smart alerts based on customized parameters mean you will have less anxiety when you can’t be with your higher risk horses.
Sedation & Drug Administration Monitoring
Whether a patient is headed for the operating room, in surgery, or in recovery, heart rate- and vital sign-evolution analysis with the Piavet System gives vets instant insights into the success of administered medications. The Piavet Belt is a comfortable surcingle that, depending on the surgical area, can be worn throughout the entire process while non-invasively delivering real-time vital sign data to the surgical team. Instead of having vet techs stay full time with a horse during sedation recovery (which can take up to an hour), they can monitor the patient remotely while doing more value-add work in the meantime.
Whether a horse just came off the racetrack or the lunge line, real-time heart rate and temperature correlation gives you immediate insights into vital sign recovery patterns of horses at rest. With the Piavet System, vets can analyze heart rate recovery and heart rate variability for horses exhibiting poor performance, or equip trainers with data that could help them optimize fitness and training plans.
At Piavita, we like happy vets and healthy horses. It’s that simple. Our mission it to transform veterinary care by providing remote health monitoring technology to the veterinary industry. With a non-invasive, sensor-enabled hardware device and sophisticated software platform, the Piavet Solution automates and digitizes repetitive, manual tasks to help vets save time and improve patient outcomes. We are a diverse group of engineers, developers, researchers, and horse people with a passion for delivering meaningful solutions to veterinarians.
